What?

·       For this week the reading I chose to read that was related to literacy in Early childhood was Talk to me, baby! Supporting language development in the first 3 years (Bardige & Bardige, 2008). I chose to look at this reading as I wanted to see how early language development can be supported for infants and toddlers. I haven’t worked with infants and toddlers yet and so I thought this reading would be interesting to read about younger children’s learning development.

·       The reading I chose to look at that was related to numeracy was Measurement of Kindergartners' Understanding of Early Mathematical Concepts (VanDerHeyden, Broussard, Snyder, George, Lafleur & Williams, 2011). I chose this reading as I wanted to look at how children in kindergarten understand early mathematical concepts and the types of concepts that they understand. I am very interested in how children this age do learn so I wanted to get some ideas for myself on how I can teach numeracy at this age level as well.

What?

·       For this week the reading I chose to look at that was related to literacy was Handy Manny and the Emergent Literacy Technology Toolkit (Hourcade, Parette, Boekmann & Blum, 2010). I chose to look at this reading as over the past couple of weeks in my class, we have been looking at toddlers and infants learning to use technology and how technology can be used to help young children’s literacy development.

·       The reading that I chose to read that was related to numeracy was Math is for Everyone: Strategies for Supporting Early Mathematical Competencies in Young Children (Notari-Syverson & Sadler, 2008). I chose to look at this reading for this week as I wanted to further look into how early childhood educators can support mathematical competencies in young children and how children can learn mathematical concepts in the experiences they are provided with in an early childhood centre and at home. I found this article very interesting and resourceful as it gives many suggestions of how educators can support numeracy development in young children.

What?

·       For this week the reading that I chose to look at that was related to literacy development in early childhood was Using Stories Effectively with Infants and Toddlers (Birckmayer, Kennedy & Stonehouse, 2009). I chose to read this reading as in the past couple of weeks in my class, we have been looking at how infants and toddlers learn through literacy and numeracy related experiences. I haven’t really focussed much on infants and toddlers learning developments as on my placements I have just been working in a kindergarten with children who are 4 years old. So therefore I wanted to do some more research into the literacy development of toddlers and infants so I can gain a greater understanding of how they learn and how I can teach them.

·       For this week the reading that I chose to read that was related to numeracy in early childhood was Toddlers’ Opportunities to Learn Mathematics (Björklund, 2008). I wanted to look at this reading as in my class we were looking at how toddlers can learn through numeracy related play and the types of experiences that can be used to teach toddlers. I found this reading quite interesting and it has helped me to have a better understanding of how toddlers can learn mathematics.

What?

·       For this week the reading that I chose to read that was related to literacy in early childhood was Integrating Visual and Verbal Literacies in the Early Childhood Classroom (Edwards & Willis, 2000). I chose to read this reading as it looks at how the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education focuses on integrating visual and verbal literacies to teach children. I am very interested in the Reggio Emilia approach and so I wanted to read this article to see how they help children to develop literacy skills through using different forms of literacy.

·       The reading that I chose to look at that was related to numeracy in early childhood was Do Re Mi, 1-2-3: That’s How Easy Math Can Be: Using Music to Support Emergent Mathematics (Geist & Geist , 2008). I chose to look at this reading as over the past weeks I have looked at how music can be used to support literacy development and so I wanted to see if music could be used to support numeracy development in early childhood settings as well. I also am a very musical person so this reading has helped me also to know how I can use my musical skills to teach children.

What?

·     For this week the reading I chose to read that was related to numeracy in early childhood was Engaging Indigenous children in mathematical learning in an early childhood setting (Warren, Thomas & DeVries, 2011). I chose to read this reading as in the previous weeks I read another reading that was about how to engage Indigenous children in numeracy-related activities and from reading this I wanted to research a bit more on how Indigenous children’s mathematical learning in Australia can be supported and how these children can be engaged.

·    The reading I chose that was related to literacy in early childhood was Multiple Literacies: The Whole Mind at Work (Nelson & Zobairi, 1999). I chose to read this reading this week as I was interested and curious to find out about what multiple literacy was as I hadn’t really heard of it before. I also wanted to look at a reading that focussed on the Reggio Emilia teaching approach as once on my placement I went to an exhibition that was about the Reggio Emilia teaching approach and I found it very interesting. I also enjoy the arts and I wanted to look at a reading that talked about how literacy can be taught using the arts.

What?

·       For this week, the reading I chose to read that was related to numeracy in early childhood was How Do Parents Support Preschooler’s Numeracy Learning Experiences at Home? (Skwarchuk, 2009). I chose to read this article as this week I wanted to find out more about how parents can support preschooler’s numeracy development at home and how important it is for parents to assist in a child’s development in numeracy at home. I believe this article gave me some insight into how important it is for parents to help in their children’s numeracy learning; however I hope to continue to research into this further.

·       The reading I chose to read that was related to literacy in early childhood was Ecological influences of the home and the child-care center on preschool-age children’s literacy development (Weigel, Martin & Bennett, 2005). I chose to read this article as during the past week I wanted to find out more on how children’s literacy development can be influenced by daily experiences at home as well as experiences at kindergarten or child-care.

What?
·       The reading I chose to read this week that was related to numeracy in early childhood was Math Is for Everyone: Strategies for Supporting Early Mathematical Competencies in Young Children (Notari-Syverson & Sadler 2008). I chose this article to read this week as I wanted to look further into what type of numeracy related experiences and activities teachers can use to help children develop skills in numeracy. I also wanted to look more at what numeracy looked like in an early childhood setting as well and I believe this book has been very helpful in answering what I wanted to know.

·       The reading I chose that was related to literacy in early childhood was Books as Natural Support for Young Childrens Literacy Learning (Gaffney, Ostrosky & Hemmeter 2008). I chose to read this article as I was interested in looking at how reading books with children can help children develop literacy skills in reading and writing and how important it is to read in the early years of a child’s life.

What?
· The reading I selected that is related to numeracy in early childhood was Take-Home Numeracy Kits For Preschool Children (Macmillan 2004). I chose this article to read as I thought it would be interesting to see how the teachers working in a Koori preschool in New South Wales were able to deeply engage Australian Indigenous children in numeracy-related activities. I thought it would be interesting to see the types of activities that they created for the children as I also wanted to know a bit about what kinds of activities there are for children that are numeracy-related.
· The reading I selected that is related to literacy in early childhood was The Role of Literacy in Early Childhood Education (The Reading Teacher 2004). This journal is compiled of different sections of research written by six different educators. I chose to read this journal as I thought it would be interesting to see what roles literacy does play in early childhood and how important literacy is in the early years of a child’s life.
