4.3 – Literacy and numeracy experiences I have engaged in over a 24-hour period

I decided to try to write down everything that I have done in a 24 hour period that is related to literacy and numeracy and here is the list that I have made:

-          Making Cupcakes and measuring out ingredients – numeracy

-          Watching television - literacy

-          Typing notes and making sure I have the right amount to hand out – literacy and numeracy

-          Reading a recipe – literacy

-          Counting with children – numeracy

-          Talking several times during the day – literacy

-          Reading a book – literacy

-          Singing with children – literacy

-          Reading story to children – literacy

-          Writing assignment – literacy

-          Counting money – numeracy

-          Reading a card – literacy

-          Talking to teachers – literacy

-          Painting shapes with children - numeracy

-          Reading newspaper- literacy

-          Talking to friends - literacy

-          Talking to my mum - literacy

-          Text messaging - literacy

-          Writing on twitter and facebook - literacy

-          Reading piano sheet music - literacy

-          Talking to children - literacy

-          Counting in songs - numeracy

-          Counting snails - numeracy

-          Counting cupcakes - numeracy

-          Counting earrings, making sure they’re in pairs - numeracy

-          Setting alarm clock - numeracy

-          Talking on the phone - literacy

-          Setting timer for microwave - numeracy

-          Using calculator - numeracy

-          Using calendar – literacy and numeracy

-          Reading labels – literacy

-          Reading signs on buildings - literacy

-          Looking at road signs - literacy

-          Calculating how many minutes it gets to a specific place – numeracy

-          Checking temperature – numeracy

-          Talking to my dogs – literacy

-          Listening and singing along to songs – literacy

-          Taking notes while watching a lecture - literacy

From looking at this list, I’m sure there were even more things that I did in the 24 hour period, but from this list it is still a lot of things. Some of these activities I wouldn’t even notice if I was being literate or numerate. Literacy and numeracy is used in our lives all the time. If we didn’t have numeracy or literacy I don’t think we would be living at all as to live you have to use literacy and numeracy. I found it hard at times to remember to write things down in my list as I was busy at times and so I wasn’t thinking whether I was being literate or numerate. From making this list it has given be a greater understanding of how we do use literacy and numeracy in our lives and I have been able to understand more about what literacy and numeracy are. I have also been able to be more aware of how dependent on literacy and numeracy I am. I do find it rather incredible how literate and numerate  we can be every day. From this I will be able to teach children about the many ways they can be literate and numerate in their lives too as I will be able to help them become more aware of the experiences that they take part in that are related to literacy and numeracy.
